The HCC VICEROY Scholar has been selected to intern at the U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia—becoming the first HCC student ever chosen for the prestigious VICEROY ENVOY internship.

Before stepping into a Houston City College classroom, Gia Jones served her nation in the U.S. Army as a logistics specialist stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. When she returned to civilian life, she took the opportunity to pursue a healthcare career using her GI Bill. She chose to become a sonographer, and she chose HCC to help her achieve her goal.

Troi-Lyzette “Troi” Perry had mentally penciled in 2027 as the year she might finally return to college. Then one evening, her phone buzzed. It was a text from Houston City College (HCC) letting her know about the Houston Reconnect Scholarship. She almost ignored it.

HCC is joining institutions across the country in celebrating Community College Month, a national campaign that spotlights the vital role community and technical colleges play in driving workforce development and expanding economic opportunity.

When Marisabel Morales sent her model down the runway at the 10th annual Fashion Fusion competition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, she made history. Morales, a student in HCC's award-winning Fashion Design program, became the first student to construct a fully 3D-printed gown––and the only designer at “Fashion Fusion X” to present a garment created entirely through 3D printing. The show on Jan. 30 paid tribute to the legendary artist Frida Kahlo.

When Jeromecia Brantley left the Tampa, Florida area two years ago, she wasn’t just relocating, she was starting over. With three young children in tow, she came to Houston determined to rewrite her story and show her two sons and daughter that it’s never too late to build something better.

As a woman of Mexican descent, Tanya Roche always felt drawn to the esteemed artist Frida Kahlo, known for her self-portraits of pain, passion and vibrant colors. Roche, a 47-year-old HCC Fashion Design student, originally from Queens, New York, used to buy clothing and dress like the famous artist in different phases of her life.

When Brittaney Wilmore reflects on her path to a career in broadcast journalism, she credits HCC with giving her more than an education. It gave her confidence, community and a clear sense of direction.

Elexis Robinson, a Global Online Honors College student at HCC, is pursuing a degree in artificial intelligence with a renewed sense of focus and intention. As a returning student and mother of a young son, she says discipline, structure and support help her excel academically.
